Census of Marine Life Mapping & Visualization

The Census of Marine Life was a global network of researchers in more than 80 nations engaged in a 10-year scientific initiative to assess and explain the diversity, distribution, and abundance of life in the oceans.  The world’s first comprehensive census of the past, present, and future of life in the oceans was released in October 2010.

MGEL served as the Mapping and Visualization lead for the Census of Marine Life.  In that role MGEL developed new and compelling visualizations of Census research, supported the development of a central CoML database, and worked with partners such as Google and National Geographic to develop additional visualizations of Census findings.

The Census of Marine Life completed research in 2010.
